Synopsis - “My name is Harriet Manners, and I am still a geek.” Harriet
knows that modelling won’t transform you. She knows that being as
uniquely odd as a polar bear isn’t necessarily a bad thing (even in a
rainforest). And that the average person eats a ton of food a year,
though her pregnant stepmother is doing her best to beat this. What Harriet doesn’t know is where she’s going to fit in once the new baby arrives. With
summer plans ruined, modelling in Japan seems the perfect chance to get
as far away from home as possible. But nothing can prepare Harriet for
the craziness of Tokyo, her competitive model flatmates and her errant
grandmother’s ‘chaperoning’. Or seeing gorgeous Nick everywhere she
goes. Because, this time, Harriet knows what a broken heart feels like. Can geek girl find her place on the other side of the world or is Harriet lost for good?
Harriet is back! I was lucky enough to get an ARC of Geek Girl a long time ago and I was also lucky to get the sequel, Model Misfit as well!
Model Misfit is a simple and quick read yet it is bursting at the seams with hilarious misadventures, genuine characters and a plot that has you cringing, laughing and teary-eyed through every step of the way. It felt as though every page brought a new laugh and I honestly just can't get enough of Harriet's world.
Everyone loves an unlikely winner and that is exactly what Harriet is. Through the Geek Girl books, Smale shows that you don't have to be perfect to shine. In the first book, through her fumbling and hiding under tables, Harriet accidentally becomes a model and we follow her belly-laughing adventures. Model Misfit is no different.
Harriet bursts onto the scene as she is about to take her final exams at school. Oh and she's painted bright gold. Of course she is...! From the get-go, Harriet's life is full of embarrassing incidents and in Model Misfit it looks as though the crazy model world that she found herself in, is about to come crashing down around her. But not before we've laughed our socks off and drooled over Lion Boy.
Oh, Lion Boy. Where to even begin?! Model Misfit throws a wide range of emotions at it's reader. There are some incredible quote-worthy moments (i'll post my fave below!) and a ton of random facts to learn courtesy of our Geek Girl, Harriet Manners.
However, a review of Geek Girl 2 would be amiss without mention of the beautiful, wonderful, creepy Toby. I just ADORE him! Am I the only one who is completely torn between OTP's? Lion Boy & Harriet Vs Toby & Harriet? It's just too much! He's so endearing, loving and hilariously funny that I just can't help but smile whenever he is around.
I highly recommend these books to anyone who wants a good laugh and a feel good book! Smale is wonderful and i'm very excited about Geek Girl 3 and whatever else Smale gives us in future.
*** This is my favourite quote from the book. Sorry for bad quality but I made it on my phone!
